Therapy- Individual and Parent/Child
I have experience working with children, young-to midlife adults, and families from diverse backgrounds, including foster, adoptive, and birth families. While I enjoy work with people of all backgrounds, I have a primary focus on working with those who may have felt outside of the dominant culture: such as people of color, multi-racial individuals, those transracially adopted, those in interracial or bi-cultural families, first or second generation Americans, or those marginalized by their worldview or lifestyle.
My work is heavily influenced by a social justice lens, which includes awareness of the client within the larger systems of oppression and systems of empowerment. I practice therapy from a relational, psychodynamic perspective believing that the therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change and transformation and that our earliest relationships impact our selves and our relationships today. I strive to help clients to build on their strengths with client resiliency at the forefront of therapy and I provide support to my clients to uncover any barriers in their lives to living the life they want.
As your or your adolescent's therapist, I support the integration of unique life stories and address issues that may arise within cross-cultural relationships. I am also aware of the emotional suffering that can be caused by oppression in its many forms, including racism and daily microaggressions, as well as the pain that comes when feelings are invalidated. I help clients to find and create safe spaces in their lives including ideally, within the therapeutic relationship. I also support family members who identify with the majority culture to grow in their own ethnic identity development. I work with people around issues of identity and belonging.
I also help families to increase their positive connection and secure attachments through attachment work. I support children 12 and up, who may have experienced early trauma (such as neglect and early separation from primary caregiver), and their current caregivers.
For any reason you have to seek my services, we will create a path of treatment together to get you or your child to where you want to go within therapy.
I will seek to provide referrals for issues beyond my expertise.
